The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), assumed on October 14, 2023, the leadership of the P-20, a group composed of the presidents of parliaments of the G-20. He received the position from the President of the Lok Sabha of India, Om Birla.

Upon taking office, Lira stated that the P-20 provides an important platform for parliaments to contribute and lead discussions on major global issues.

He reiterated Brazil’s position against acts of violence and military aggression and advocated for dialogue to resolve controversial situations.

The congressman also pointed out challenges that need to be addressed in the world, such as hunger, malnutrition, insecurity, climate change, and the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I appeal that, as representatives of our peoples, our parliaments increasingly become an essential part of the fight against these problems,” he said.

The President of the Chamber reiterated Brazil's position against military aggression and advocated for dialogue to resolve conflicts.

War in the Middle East

Lira expressed concern again about the conflict in the Middle East and condemned the violence of terrorist attacks. “We strongly condemn terrorist acts against the Israeli people. As representatives of the G-20 parliaments, we must express our desire for a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians to be achieved in the near future,” said Arthur Lira.

Female Participation

The President of the Chamber also advocated for greater participation of women in politics and highlighted his intention to bring the women’s agenda to the next P-20 summit, which will be held in Brazil in 2024.

“The P-20 also needs to encourage greater engagement of female leadership in its debates, as the Indian Parliament did by dedicating a specific session to the topic of gender equality,” said Lira.
